The Newborn Session

::Good Things to Know About Newborns::

Newborns are perhaps my most favorite subject in the world to shoot, aside from my own kids of course. They comprise the bulk of my work and are the one session I rarely turn away no matter how busy I am.  The most important thing regarding this session, is that it be performed within the first 10 days of  birth. It is best that you contact me prior to your due date so that I can pencil you in. From there I will work you in whenever your little one decides to come.  ellie-nb-info

~Why 10 days?

The beauty of newborn portraiture, I believe, is in those sleepy curled up images that only come once in their little life. We have this magical small window of time to achieve this look. After about 2 weeks, baby acne can start to appear. They also start to wake up and become more alert, making it very difficult to sooth them back into a deep sleep.  The most important reason is that they become less pliable day after day, making those cozy curled up images very difficult to achieve.

~Where does the session take place?

Sessions usually occur in the clients home for maximum comfort for both parents and baby.  I will bring all of my equipment and depending on the quality of light, which can be greatly affected by weather, I also bring studio lighting. I have worked very hard at perfecting artificial lighting in a way that mimics soft natural light so there is no need to worry if we go that route. Sessions can be done in my studio upon request.

~How long does the session take?

They can take up to 3 hours with plenty of time in-between for feedings and soothing baby to sleep.

~What about props?

I typically do not work with props, with the exception of newborns. Even then, they are very simple. I will bring baskets, handmade wraps, clean cozy blankets and hats to each session. However, I always look for items in your home that can be incorporated into the shoot.

~What should my newborn wear?

Simply, nothing at all or a diaper cover at the very most. Newborns look best in just their bare skin or wrapped in a simple blanket. Outfits tend to overpower the infant at this stage and I do recommend we save those adorable outfits for when baby is older and sitting up. I have actually had clients thank me after viewing their images for insisting on no clothes. Once they see the difference it is quite amazing!

::My Philosophy::

To me, newborn portraiture is an art form and therefore my approach is very methodical. However, the newborn is usually in charge so it is important that everyone be prepared to just go with the flow. Flexibility and patience are key, and is a must on everyone’s part in order to achieve the best images from each session.
